“Years and Miles Away”

Ocean waves,

Now years and miles away.

Altogether different from scary late night tv static,

Woke me in a dark room,

 Parents asleep,

All I could smell was grief.

Johnny Carson said goodnight,

Then stripes on a screen.

Quietly turn the lock to get outside.

Bring the plastic key.

Search moonlight to be lifted by bright,

Hear the grumble of the silver ice beast churning new squares.

No one sees me on the motel stairs-at this hour.

Through the railing, fluorescence from the diner.

 Polyester dresses serving highway vagabonds.

Cheap eats,

 Simple greets,

 Plenty of empty seats.
